Q: trying to locate SF story and author

which SF story tells about a spaceman who has to abandon his mate to an ethernal horror (i think because a technical problem or so when facing an interstellar phenomenon), an indescribable horror which starts, take a while till a summit, and then restarts again, and so for ever. I'd like to know title and author. Any help?
