Q: Unlocked cell phone

If you are like me, you love gadgets and cell phones. Generally, I change cell phones once a year depending on the cellular providers' contract. You can imagine, that over time, I have accumulated quite a few cell phones. Now, I want to sell them. My question is, when interested parties ask if its "unlocked", what is the best way to respond? Assume that the cell phone is no longer under contract and is paid in full. Would that be considered "unlocked"?

An unlocked cell phone is a phone that can be used with any provider. If you buy your phone from a your provider then it is NOT unlocked no matter how long you've had it. Their are two ways to unlock a phone. One way is with an unlock code. Sometimes you can call your provider and they will give you these over the phone most of the time for a small fee. You can also find software on the internet that can make the codes for you. Or you can find a few websites if you search around on google that will give you free codes to unlock your phone. The downside to using an unlock code is that it will still have all your providers software branding and preloaded software.
The second way to unlock the phone is to buy a data cable for your phone and the firmware for your phone and flash it yourself. Or you can take it to a local cell phone shop and they can do this for you for again another small fee ($30USD)
So, yeah. You would know if your phone is unlocked because it would be something you would have to do and yeah, it just means it can be used with any provider that takes sim cards (ie: Cingular, T

Check www.howardforums.com for a ton of cell phone information including the numbers of some unlockers. Most of those "we sell GSM" phone booths in malls do it for like $20, depending on the model. It's always a good idea to get your phones unlocked, that way if you go travelling you can use a foriegn SIM card in it.

Unlocked means that the phone is not locked to a carrier. It most likely has to be a GSM phone, so anyone can put their provider's sim card in an the phone would work. Best way to know is to put a tmobile card into a cingular phone or vice versa, and if it works then its unlocked

This site apparently buys cell phones. I didn't notice it asking whether they are locked or not. To get your phone unlocked, you usually pay like $20 or something and you can get it done.
