Read the back of the box.

Makeing a cake from scratch is hard. Best to go to the store and buy one. The best way is mom's favorite cake and buy the frosting she likes too. Then look at the back of the box. Make sure that you have a proper tool to measure all of the ingredients exactly. This means a separate measuring cup of liquid than for powders. Follow the directions on the back of the box exactly. Don't do it stoned or anything like that. Concentrate and follow the directions EXACTLY . . . read them 3 or 4 times if you have too. Just follow the directions EXACTLY if you live above 3,500 feet find a box with instructions for that too.

I disagree, a homemade cake is way more special. If you do end up getting a cake from the store, at least put some effort in to decorate it nicely. Write her a message in the frosting or something. Use those little silver balls to make a border. Add a few drops of food coloring to the frosting to make it more colorful. Get one or two indoor sparklers to stick in the cake instead of candles. I'm sure your mom will be appreciating the effort you put in, rather than comparing the quality to a store-bought cake.

I've made both of these with great success, for a traditional yellow cake: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_21637,00.html Or, if you prefer chocolate: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_14226,00.html

I usually start with a basic box spice cake and substitue the water with a couple of mashed bananas and applesause, add shredded carrots, zuchinni, raisins and chopped walnuts, then top with cream cheese frosting.

1)  Add instant pudding to a recipe for chocolate cake.

2)  Kalua and powdered sugar makes a great icing.
