If you haven't played Half Life 2, you haven't played one of the finest FPSs ever, lauded by virtually every reviewer/player ever.
F.E.A.R. is a great shooter, but you honestly need a pretty robust system to get any kind of decent framerates. Nice game though.

I just finished it for the first time last night. It was in all aspects a top notch production all the way through. It's a little old so the PC version should run great on a modern PC with the graphics options cranked all the way up. I have the XBox version, and it rocks.

Counter-strike is definitely a great FPS to start on. HL2 is pretty sweet also. If you're going for some classical training, HL1 and Unreal tournament are good starters.
