Q: Painting over spray paint?

I have inherited a really ugly door that has been spray painted black, who knows how long ago. I would love to paint over it, but didn't know if there's a proper way to make sure the paint actually stays on and covers the black. Do I just need a good primer coat, or is just painting over it enough?
