As with almost everything, it depends...

It depends on how fancy you want to get. Do you want a huge event? A "destination wedding" ? A huge catered meal?
For 30-50 people, depending on the style of wedding anywhere from around $1000 to $50,000. People get crazy - gowns that cost thousands of dollar, rental of a site for the ceremony running into the thousands, photographers for several hundred to a thousand, huge catered meals at a second site that includes rental of tables, chairs, place-settings, decorations, etc. running into several, several thousands of dollars. I guess that's fine if you have the money, but it seems a lot of people don't mind running themselves and/or their parents into debt for their "dream wedding."
I on the other hand am a big fan of the simple tasteful event. Someone's home or yard or local church or park for the ceremony, a reasonably priced dress, rented tuxes and dresses for attendants, etc. A simple reception with light food and maybe some music provided by friends, etc. It's easier on the couple, easier on the family, and usually more fun for the guests.
Then again, my wedding involved only 12 guests and cost under $2000 even though it was a "destination wedding" in Lake Tahoe. And watching friends now going slowly insane planning their own "events" I don't mind at all.

Caribbian

A lot of people these days do it in an exotic destination, Caribbian being a most common one. In that case, the wedding ceremony itself is very cheap, if not free. However, the cost to the atendees is much steeper.
