how much do you make?

if you make enough money get something around 4 or 5 grand, if you are sure she is the one, she will really appreciate it. and make sure it is a ring\band package... if you wanting more affordable, around a grand for the package is good, you can always get financed through the store you buy it at, there financing is decent

Its all relative

Its all about the type of girl you've got and how much cash you've got. As a lower middle class guy with a low maintenance girl I'd spend between $1000 and $2000 so I'm sure it'll last without forfeiting our vacation this summer.

I agree, my wife was very happy with a ring under $1000, but a close friend of mine was straight up told by his fiancee that he had to spend at least $2000.

Make a good assessment of your relationship first. Then, I'd say $100 for every year you plan on being married.

That can get expensive. Yikes!!!

not that bad really. like others have said around 4k - 5k. 50 years X $100 = $5000

The most important thing about getting engaged is making sure it is something that you both want and you will be happy together for many many years. If the girl truly loves you then it really shouldn't matter how much you spend on her. Listen to her when you go window shopping and take notes on what appeals to her. Buy something in the style that she likes and you will definately get more brownie points!

also consider...

Also consider the fact that the ring will be something that will be with her for a long time. You could even start a tradition by passing it down to the next generation. At first, it felt like I spent a lot for the ring I bought my fiancee but took the above into consideration. "Upgrading" the ring down the line wouldn't make that ring as "special"....the one you actually proposed with. My fiance has a friend who, while was engaged, had her ring "upgraded" twice before getting married. And the 3rd ring wasn't that great. I think that was rather stupid. He could have gotten a better ring had he not gone through these "upgrades." I personally think that it has lost its sentimental value long ago.

then take that to the friend of the family that you have known since you were 4 and have him make it for her to her design for one forth the cost of retail. that way it could be worth 1 years worth of your income retail.
