Try a mix

I ended up going with a half Black Lab and half Border Collie. She looks mostly like a lab but is smaller. The perfect medium size for me. And she has the smarts of the Border Collie and the happiness of the lab, so in my opinion absolutely perfect. =)

I have a mix(golden retriever/pointer) and she's the perfect size. She is a little less than 50 lbs. and a lot smaller then a normal retriever. She's so smart too, even her vet was impressed with all that she knows.

Our family had a Black Lab/Border Collie and like what was said above, she was a very smart and happy dog. She was with us for 18 years, and not at all yippy, but she new when to sound the alarm. You could tell her what to do and she would do it, she stayed out of our bedrooms, unless called in and such. I believe she was about 70ish lbs. We loved her, she was great and not at all high maintenance till the last month of her life. (I%u2019m a mutt fan they tend to have less medical issues from what I understand.)

Go to the pound!

Mutts are usually a ton healthier than purebreeds.  Go to a shelter with your wife and find a dog you both like.  Find something not too yippy and not too big.  You can also find a full-grown dog if you don't want to go through the process of housetraining and throwing away all of your good shoes.

There are a ton of dogs out there looking for a good home.  Don't worry about the breed, just go to a shelter and let the dog find you.

An Alterntive

Get her the Yorkie.  My ex bought a Chiahuahua after I lost the same argument, and I trained him steadily to not bark...  Besides the times when I play with him (he's barky then) he's a really quiet dog.

This site is pretty good: http://www.wonderpuppy.net/choose.htm For pure breed dogs: www.akc.org Beagles are fun but can bark quite a bit (but not yippy). If you want a pure breed dog, maybe a Basengi. They may be small but they have attitute. They're very fun and are known as the barkless dog (not a yippy thing). Corgis are big dogs in small packages. So your wife would have a lap dog and you'd get a pal to play fetch and be rough and tumble. They can bark a lot, but aren't yippy. Though they can be a bit trick to train if they're your first dog. Or maybe go to the local shelter and pick a pooch you can both agree on. If it's an adult dog, you'll be able to see its personality from the start. Happy hunting!

Shiba Inu

Japanese dog... small with a big dog attitude, very protective and family orientated. They are like mini-akitas. They are also adorable... "The Japanese have three words to describe the Shiba temperament. The first is "kan-i" which is bravery and boldness combined with composure and mental strength. The opposite side of "kan-i" is "ryosei" which means good nature with a gentle disposition. One cannot exist without the other. The charming side of the Shiba is "sobuku" which is artlessness with a refined and open spirit." from shibas.org I don't have one, I have an akita, but if I had to have a small dog for some reason, I would get one of these. They are a little expensive though.
