Whatever media, film literature, imaginings ect., you focus heavily on tends to have repetition relected in the mind, often thru dreams too. If you strive to engage in deeply peaceful things and focus on those pleasant, but not exciting, things around you should be able to affect yourself diminishing the nightmare response. Enriching myself this way by helping others, and being self content, I've found is my best remedy. Raptor235, also makes a valid point, food can affect people 's dreams a great deal.  I do best with live enzyme rich, fresh food. Cooked food has no enzymes to aid digestion, and cellular energy uptake. Food often leaves by-products that act like opiates in the blood stream, cooked usually mare than fresh - the brain is sensitive to this.

The reason you ahve nightmares is from all the crap you are dealing or not dealing with in your day life.  List out everything that's bothering you, from the dishes being dirty, to the ignorant person who stepped on your shoes.  2 hours before bed, tackle one of these thinsg, and prefferably something physical....  The visual sense of accomplishment will allow your stress levels to jump way down...  Get a kids book, and read it to your wife.  Sweet dreams to follow.

Maybe you are worrying about having the nightmare, that's why you have it.

Do you realise when you are in a dream? Because you know when you are in a dream... You can easily control it (Lucid Dreaming).

What do you do for a living if you don't mind me asking?

ugh, I *hate* sweets and chocolate.  I'd rather eat leafy greens anyday than to pop down that much sugar.  I have a minimum intake of sodas a week but that's about it.
