Surgery

While a student, I had a major medical emergency and no insurance.  Between the surgeon and the hospital, I spent less than $1000 total.  (for x-rays, mri, MAJOR surgery and a brief stay in the hospital)  The only related expense (outsourced) that didn't cut me a break was the anesthesiologist's office.  His bill alone was more than all the other related bills combined.

p.s. While the surgery did not technically 'save' my life, I would have completly lost the use of my right arm and been in pain for the remainder of my life.  So, it functionally saved my life.  I'd say that's a pretty big and unbelievable kind affect.  :-)
