I have a great gaming PC and I play lots of the big name games as well as the text MMOs.

They mostly appeal to your imagination. They use words to describe the setting and tone of the game which really works quite well for some.

Be open to the idea of trying out some of the more popular ones first. They usually have a really good newbie system in place to help you.

Well, it's hard to find a computer nowadays that is not too advanced for text games.  I would imagine that almost everyone playing them has a good computer--at least in terms of the computer they own far surpassing the requirements to run the game.

I play Legend of the Green Dragon. Its a web based (text) MUD based on Seth Able's, Legend of the Red Dragon which was on most BBS's during the early to mid 90's. Check it out at http://www.lotgd.org . There is also a lot of other sites hosting this game. Do a google search to find those.

I played ADOM back a few months, http://www.adom.de. It was my first RPG ever and it was fun. But I stopped playing it because it was too hard for me.
