There are plenty of people who still play text games, actually. Check out http://www.topmudsites.com/
I personally played Shattered Kingdoms.

I have a great gaming PC and I play lots of the big name games as well as the text MMOs.
They mostly appeal to your imagination. They use words to describe the setting and tone of the game which really works quite well for some.
Be open to the idea of trying out some of the more popular ones first. They usually have a really good newbie system in place to help you.

I played ADOM back a few months, http://www.adom.de. It was my first RPG ever and it was fun. But I stopped playing it because it was too hard for me.

Or if you really want to see a more exhaustive listing of this type of genre, try googling for "roguelike" games!
