Q: Suggestions on Web Development

Some Classmates and I are going to create a database that will keep track of newly arriving animals to shelters throughout our city. We want to have a web based entry system and a web based search, that updates regularly. Any suggestions in the best way to accomplish this?

PHP and MySQL are the best for a quick and easy way build a web based database frontend. Work in AJAX and other extras later. But for simple, stick with PHP and MySQL for a start. Plenty of tutorials for whipping up forms and searches. Start out with Google.

Joomla is very good. See Joomla.org for more info. It's a free PHP/Mysql-based Content Management System. It supports blogs, forums, polls, calendars, print-friendly pages, RSS feeds, web indexing/caching and has plenty eye candy. This is a one-click install at Dreamhost.com - so all you do is sign up for an account there (make sure you use a promotional code when signing up, eg enter QUESTION to get 90 USD off, making the first year just 29.40 USD), then on the "One-Click Installs" page you select Joomla, specify a database name, and everything is setup for you automatically. You use the configuration pages in Joomla to specify all content and presentation. No Web/database skills needed for this. Plus with Dreamhost you can setup an unlimited number of Joomla-driven websites, unlimited domains, unlimited databases, 20 GB diskspace, 1 TB (i.e. 1024 GB) bandwidth/mth. So it's easily flexibile enough to handle all your future projects too.

Seriously easy. Google Ruby on Rails and start reading tutorials. I've read about three and they all walk you through most of what you state you want to do. At least by following the tutorials you will be half there.

I would use a content management system like Zope/Plone or Drupal if you actually want to make all changes to the website through a web application. No web design experience necessary. Have to be able to get through the installation process for which there are numerous how-to's, walk throughs, tutorials and what not.
