Q: Linux Distro
Submitted By: firelord, 50 days, 6 hours, 56 minutes ago
Ok, not starting a flame war but I need to ramp up on Linux fairly quickly and I don't know what distro I may be using. What would be a fairly easy distro to dual boot with my Windows XP laptop. I have a Dell Inspirion 9300 and I'd like to be able to use the majority of its hardware. I'm a longtime DOS/Windows user and can get around fairly well there. www.linuxdoc.org plans on being my friend.
Thanks

Ubuntu is the way to go

One of the best distros to learn on right now has to be Ubuntu, especially if you are looking for ease of install and dualboot. I wouldn't go with one of the newest flights, perhaps look for 5.0 Breezy Badger install discs.
Anoyher good way to go might be with a live cd. There are many to choose from, but the most well known is Knoppix, which is based on Debian (the same as ubuntu)

Long time Linux user here and I love Ubuntu. It is one of the best out there right now. You can use the LiveCD that can be downloaded to give their system a test run and make sure all of your peripherials are going to work. Give it a shot and ask away on the questions we need more Linux Q&A on the site. You can get Ubuntu from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/

I personally like suse, it works for both personal and professional useage ... however you can always try out live CDs ... almost every distro have a live CD .. download it, burn it and try it ... simple

we've been through different distributions ove

In 1994 we started with Red Hat. When the changes their pricing structure, we tried SUSE, Mandrake, and then Knoppix live CD to install Debian. We now use Ubuntu/Debian almost exclusively.
There's no real difference between desktop and server distrobutions. I've found most admins want a GUI desktop on the admin console when they are in a hurry.
Installs like Knoppix or Ubuntu will auto detect most hardware. Both have live CDs that you can boot off with out installing

SimplyMepis

I use SimpleMepis on my laptop as it is currently the only distro of the many I've tried (Fedora, SuSE, Ubuntu, Slackware, Gentoo, etc.) that I can configure to work with my full wide screen resolution, video card, sound card and built-in wireless card without much hassle. I've got it to dual boot fine with a copy of Windows XP.

Puppy

Puppy Linux makes other distros look like slow, cumbersome, bloatware

How good is it?

But nobody has yet recommended Debian. I've tried Ubuntu, SUSE, Puppy, Linspire, Red Hat, Fedora Core Slackware, Knoppix, Mandriva(and mandrake), Damn Small, Gentoo, and a few you've probably never even heard of (like redmond linux, and gamerix) and found them to be lacking in some fashion. (Most often in installability to the various pc's I'm in contact with.)
Debian's been the most rock solid of all those that I've used, and seems to be the simplest to get installed via a network install cd. Plus I've found Apt to be fairly handy fcr CLI application installs, so I'd recommend it over the other distros. But, YMMV...
