Channel

Check what channel you are running the wireless on. Also if you have any wireless phones in the house it may cause interferance. Also, other wireless signals may cause interferance on your system. Try setting the channel on 3 or 1, or even the highest it can go.

Must Be the Router
Submitted By: Abs ( 50 days, 16 hours, 40 minutes ago )
I have worked quite a lot with wireless routers. I have found at least couple of Linksys routers having the range problem. It could just be a router issue. I would buy another router, replace it and see if there is any difference. If there is, then bingo, the router problem, if not, could be anything else. My bet would be on the former. Let me know regarding the results...

that is not a good suggestion... "I would buy another router, replace it and see if there is any difference. If there is, then bingo, the router problem, if not, could be anything else." you thin that is advice? lol i would try changing the channel first, then i would check for a firmware upgrade from linksys.com, then i would make sure the antennas are screwed in all the way... i have installed a couple where the antenna caps were all the way down but the "fitting" under the plastic caps were not screwed in all the way. I would try just getting a bigger antenna, before i would suggest getting a new one... hope i could help.

Channel 6
Submitted By: jonclaude ( 50 days, 16 hours, 39 minutes ago )
Linksys and other routers generally default to channel 6. If you are able to set to a channel no one uses, I have found this can help. (I've been doing channel 9 for all the wireless routers I set up)

If you are running Windows...

...you could try disabling "Wireless Zero Config" Service. Just and idea. Sometimes it can cause you to loose connection with the AP because it is busy looking for other possible APs. Good luck. http://zerovertex.com

Move as far away from a CRT Monitor

CRT monitors can distroy the wireless signal. Moving it as far away from the monitor will help. Also true with USB wireless adaptors.

Basics
Submitted By: vettelovr ( 50 days, 16 hours, 42 minutes ago )
Are the antennas pointing straight up? Is is in a corner? Are you using 2.4 GHz cordless phones? Try another laptop or wireless device, wireless reception varies greatly from one to the next. Try moving the router to another room, more centrally located in the apartment.

For the enthusiast

I would suggest trying all of the above answers so far. If you're still not satisfied, try checking if there is a new firmware from linksys. If you are the geek type, look for one of the alternative firmwares like dd

Cordless Phone is my bet
Submitted By: rene ( 49 days, 22 hours and 21 seconds ago )
I have a 2.4 ghz cordless phone that I am replacing asap. It does frequency hopping (DSS, Digital Spread Spectrum, Panasonic) and no matter which channel you set your router to the phone will dance all over it. On the routers there are only three channels that do not overlap at all. 1, 6, and 11. I have a wireless network camera and almost everytime the phone rings the camera freezes for a few moments. I also have wireless video baby monitor that operates on the 2.4 ghz range and has 4 channel settings on it. When the phone is idle the video is broken at half second intervals. When the phone is in use the video is useless. The baby monitor and wireless network play nicely together. I ordered a set of 5.8 ghz phones on ebay this past weekend to take care of my interference issues.... hopefully my neighbours don't buy any 2.4 ghz phones in the near future.
