Q: How Do I Sync My Laptop and Desktop Wirelessly?

I want to sync my project files on my two computers--wirelessly. What's the best way to go about doing this?
Both of my computers have wireless cards. I have a wireless router, but I don't have it plugged in right now. Can I set up an ad hoc network?
I'd prefer to have copies of files on both of my computers instead of working off the desktop hard drive. Is there a way the most recently edited file can overwrite the file on the other computer?
Open-source, freeware software solutions preferred!
