Get a job

If you want something, try working for it.

I agree, I worked all summer holidays for my laptop and I love it. Having paid for it myself makes me appreciate it so much more. Alternatively, ask your parents if you can go splits - i.e. you pay half, and your parent pay half. You'll need some good reasons for wanting a new one - not just "its uncool" - is it too slow, can't run some software you need, isn't compatible with new hardware etc?

And, not meaning to snark, but you're extremely lucky to have a computer in the first place - don't forget all those who are worse off than you.

Really, get a jobby job and get a computer for yourself.  You can check out any of the Sunday newspaper ads or build one yourself for around $500-600 that should be more than useable.  If you can get the parents to go half on it you should be sitting very pretty.

Ideas

Don't try to get your parents to buy you a new computer, instead:
Save up money
Search the web to find the computer best suited for your needs for the least amount of money

When you have about a third to a half the amount of the money of the computer you want to buy, casually mention that you are saving for a computer to help you do homework more efficiently a few times over a few days. Don't complain that your old computer is too old to play HL2 or anything likec that. A week later, say, how your computer is increasing getting harder to use because it is getting full of spyware, and explain how a new computer would help you in school (give reasons like: you'd be able to write papers quicker, you'd be able to research on the internet more efficiently, you'd be able to program faster, etc. (DONT mention gaming, or music, or movies). If they understand, show them several computers you've found while you were looking for the best deal. Explain how you've been looking for the best computer with the lowest price for the past few weeks. Ask if they could consider help paying for part of it. If they aren't convinced, think up more reasons how it would help you academically (and whatever else they want you to be good at).

Try to sell your current computer to a younger brother or a friend. Start your selling price high and explain all the great qualities of your current computer, lower your price slowly until you can sell it. Use this money towards your new computer.

You've got to sell it to your parents.

You have to look at it from your parents perspective.  If you can do what you need to with the computer you have, you've got no chance.  However, if you can make your parents think that the lack of good computer is effecting your schoolwork, you're in.  Mind you, if you're just blatantly lying, they will find out, and then you're REALLY screwed.

For a better computer, tell them about how a higher end computer will stay relevant for much longer.  My parents bought a 1.2GHz computer back when they were the best out there, and it's lasted me this long.  6 years or so.   Now that it's old and I need a replacement, I've got to convince my wife we need a new one.  Heh...funny how history repeats itself.

Please note this is a joke. I never would recommend deleting anyones data without thier full consent.

Try educating yourself AND your parents as to what your OLD computer cant do and what a NEW computer can do and how a new PC would benefit the both of you. If you're trying to get your parents to get you a new $3000 gaming rig so you can play Doom 3 when all they will ever do is surf the web via dialup.... refer to the "get a job" post ingrate. It's rougher than you think being a parent!
