Q: Why do wires entangle themselves?

Have you ever wondered as to how or why wires entangle themselves, until you realize that in order to set things straightened up again, disconnecting the wires from their holes is the only solution? Is it entropy or some other theory behind it?

The easiest way to look at it is to imagine a freeway or other road with a fair amount of traffic. All the trash and bits of rubber and stuff eventually makes its way to the center divider or the shoulder. Once there, it has much fewer agitators to push it back, thus cannot go back to the lanes.
A wire, cable, string, or anything long and flexible enough falls prey to a similar phenomenon.
When the cable is in a pile (especially with other cables), it rarely ever stays in its initial orientation. Any time you move the pile, it shifts a little. Each shift introduces the possibility of an entanglement. By definition, these entanglements are more stable. In other words, once it begins to exhibit a tangle, it's more difficult to get out than to continue in the "direction" of the tangle. The reason why we often find our cables and such in a tangle is that the shifts that don't cause a tangle only further the cable's ability to move and end up in other configurations until a tangle is initiated.

Wires Don't Tangle Themselves

What ordinarily happens is that people who wire up entertainment centers or computers don't excercise cable management, and more often then not inadvertently weave wires together.
They should be useing cable ties or cable stays to keep wires organized. This should be done not only to reduce tangling, but to maintain performance. Power cables should be kept spaced at least a few inches away from data cables, and both should be kept away from audio cables in order to prevent magnetic fields from inducing noise on neighboring cables. This noise can show up as a buzzing or whining noise in the audio path, or in reduced data rates on usb, firewire, and network cables.

It's the electrical flow in the wires, it creates attracting magnetic fields that slowly pull them around one another. That, and most people rotate their game controllers around one another more than you realize.
