My mother's computer:
Submitted By: right.h.man ( 309 days, 17 hours, 23 minutes ago )

I got a cheapo computer for my mother and set it up for her.  Two hours out of the box, it was setup and she was using it.

I installed all the patches first. Microsoft can send you an SP2 CD for free.

Then I installed antivirus, leaving it running in the background and autoupdating. Antispyware, also in the bg and autoupdating.

I installed soemthing called SPYWARE BLASTER which blocks spyware from entering your system via browsers without even being left on.

I removed the Internet Explorer icon from the desktop and replaced it with Firefox which I renamed to Internet.

No special firewall used other than the windows firewall.  She is behind a router however.

She has never been infected with anything as of yet :)

Its just that simple, I don't buy into the FUD over how windows machines are so easily attacked. Mine are still fine.

Installation order

This is how I installed Windows 1. Install XP. 2. Install all drivers. 3. (if behind a router) Download all updates. 4. Install antivirus software and spyware software. 5. Keep them up to date. I also use Symantec Corp and Spysweeper. They both keep my computers clean.

Is it possible not to have to install Spysweeper, etc? Seems to me like there would be some kinda of prevention instead of a cure...

A clean build fixes everything

I unplug my system from its network connection, do a clean install of Win XP w/ SP2, then I use AutoPatcher to update up to about the last months security updates, then i install AVG free anti-virus and pull the latest updates off of thier site on another computer. Then I install Kerio Firewall, connect to the internet and update my drivers, and install the latest updates. Then I install Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and Windows Defender. And finally i make sure I set Firefox as the default browser for all users. This is the easiest way to keep users from using maliciouse ActiveX sites.
