"Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. It's a classic.

Dr. Seuss is both amusing and helps develop language associations, so I like it.

I like Dr. Suess but by 7 years old this reading should be too easy. Time to move on to harder words and chapters!!

Poetry

Shel Silverstien has always been a favorite. Some of the poetry involves humor that is a wee bit elevated for those seven and younger ... but it is a good introduction to rhymes and culture that young minds will be intrigued by. They may not completely understand ... but at least they will ponder :)

Many children have no problem with Shel Silverstien, even when so young as 7 never underestimate a child's intelligence, it tends to cause a loss of respect for adult's perceptions of reality in my experience.

I had "Where the sidewalk ends" read to me when I was a kid..... Between the funny poetry, and the zany pictures, I loved it. 20 years later, I picked it up, and will read it to my kids. An absolute favourite!

Chronicles of Narnia
Submitted By: johnnicely ( 243 days, 9 hours, 41 minutes ago )
If you have time and your kid can keep track of a story from night to night, I highly recommend the Chronicles of Narnia

mm. somehow that comment got deleted. Anyway, I left a comment here last night explaining that first, this site has wayyyy too many bugs to be efficient and desirable. But that's beside the point. Chronicles of Narnia are great because there's seven books with about 40 short chapters each, so the books can last you quite a long time. As compared to Tolkien, whose chapters are VERY long.

Pictures, Text, good for 6 and under. Above that Hobbit is great, so are the Harry Potter books. Of course we can't forget the Berenstein Bears.

The Princess Bride is an absolutely amazing book, written on a few levels. You may even enjoy it more than your kid.

I wasn't able to read it myself til I was 10, but if you read it to them I'm sure that would work out, and it would last a while.

Just So Stories
Submitted By: Shoveling_Ferret ( 236 days, 14 hours, 17 minutes ago )
I'm well past childhood (well, legally anyway) and I still enjoy listening to Just So Stories in audiobook format.  Granted, it was written in 1902 so some of it isn't exactly PC for today, but they are still wonderful stories and meant to be read aloud.
