Probably the start of humanity... There are course so many other answers... For science: Classic Greek literature and philoshophy, or the systematazation of historical accounts by Alexander the Great and companioons, or I think the future will say the discovery of the principle of quantum mechanics.

someone wrote a book of fairytails and a confused little sheep read it only to mistake it for reality. Ever since then all the little sheep have followed the same path as that confused little sheep once did, and eventually the belief in fairytails will lead all of the sheep worldwide into a firey pit... oh, woops.. my bad, we're supposed to be talking about people.

The invention of writing

Language itself may be inevitable for humans, but the ability to write our thoughts down for anyone to read in the future had to be invented. There is virtually no history without writing. It has been said that we stand on the shoulders of giants. That is only true because of writing.
