Unlocked cell phone
Submitted By: anon (372)
If you are like me, you love gadgets and cell phones. Generally, I change cell phones once a year depending on the cellular providers' contract. You can imagine, that over time, I have accumulated quite a few cell phones. Now, I want to sell them. My question is, when interested parties ask if its "unlocked", what is the best way to respond? Assume that the cell phone is no longer under contract and is paid in full. Would that be considered "unlocked"?
is everyone else as sick of hearing about iPods as me?
Submitted By: element[0] (15)
Everyone seems to be talking about iPods and it's really starting to get old. Every second story on digg.com and slashdot, gizmodo etc. is about iPods and they are just not that good of an mp3 player for the price you pay. I'm sure i'll get a lot of crap for saying this but i don't care it's time someone said something. here is a quick list of reason why iPods are ****. br /br / 1. itunes, why should i need software installed on my computer just to move music on and off my mp3 player. My generic brand or the older irivers had the right idea, using the file system to arrange tracks. This means it just comes up like any other drive, you put file on it and if they are of a supported format you can play them. br /br / 2. Non standard batteries, why??? if my mp3 player runs out at the train station i want to be able to go and buy some batteries. also anything with an inbuilt battery will never work that well after a year. br /br / 3. I need a cable to plug it into my compuer, this is such an annoying feature, it just means that if i want to use my ipod as a hard drive or plug it into a computer it means i have to carry around a cable with me which is ironically larger than the nano itself. br /br / so rather than getting an iPod have a look around at some of the other stuff on the market. personally i like the cheap small generic brand mp3 players. They don't have heaps of space but 1 gig is fine if you switch around your songs regularly and they are so cheap(about $80 australian) that it doesn't matter if you lose they have all the features mentioned above that are missing in ipods.

Networking: why am I not using all available bandwidth?
Submitted By: michaeljh (57)
I have a home network running in my house and I'm concerned about something. Here are two computers both running Windows XP Pro SP2. There is a reliable Belkin router connecting these two on the network. One of them is wired and one is a laptop so it's wirelessly connected. Say I'm transferring a large 5 GB or so file from the wired computer to the laptop through the 54 mbps connection. The laptop is no more than three feet away from the router. The transfer progresses taking several minutes.

Anytime throughout the transmission, the networking tab on the Task Manager shows the network active. I see the active 54 mbps connection yet the Task Manger reveals that only 40-45% of network capacity is being used! Instead of getting the full 54 mbps, it's telling me I'm getting about 23ish. I've googled this for awhile and am coming up empty.

The transfer eventually completes with no problems. However, I feel bummed out about not getting more bandwidth than what I am. Anybody have such results as well and can offer a solution to get more bandwidth?

Am I the only person who is sick of phones?
Submitted By: Tha-Flash (64)
I used to like mobiles but I'm really sick of them now we have the Internet. I understand they're useful but they're DAMN ANNOYING. Don't you think?

I'm probably wrong here but it's like all services just rip people off. As soon as you think you've got a decent phone, a BETTER one comes out lol.

Everyone goes on about these FREE minutes etc, I think it's too much hassle.

Any service I've been on, I've received spam... Spam through text messages is worse than spam in emails, I think. Because it takes so long just to delete and navigate the menus.

Is it just me or are phones more trouble than they're worth?

How do I use an antenna to get High Definition tv
Submitted By: misbach (2)
I've heard that you can pickup high definition tv signals from a simple HD antenna. How do I go about doing this? I've also heard that the signal you get with an antenna is of a better quality than cable or satellite offers because the signal is not compresses as much. Is this true?

i'm going on a trip in 6 weeks and want to get a new digital camera. the number of cameras is insane, though. i like the idea of image stabilization because it seems to help compensate in low light situations. anyone have any thoughts on a good brand (at the least) or specific model? i've been looking at canon, nikon and sony so far and they all seem good. cnet rates them all around 7.8

How to correctly combine OTA HDTV and Cable TV Signal.
Submitted By: setiotis (7)
I want to combine my cable signal with my Over The Air (OTA, antenna) HDTV signal. I've already tested it by connecting it to a splitter in reverse and it seems to work. The problem is I loose 50% of the OTA signal and my cable channels come in fuzzy. I think I need some sort of amplifier but when I did some research on the net there were so many options smoke came out of my ears. So now I turn to the collective minds on the internet. Thanks for your help.
