my answer last answer was comprehensive, but the system truncated it. The setup defines what your components are and understands how they are connected. Then you set up stuff like "watch a dvd", and it understands the receiver settings, the TV input and how to turn on the dvd and start it playing. works on a mac too.

The the software for programming the remote is run from the logitech website, so the list of devices supported continues to grow.
Its small and the works in an intelligent fashion.

Best buy sells a remote that is pretty cheap (20$ ?) that you can program from the remotes you currently have, no looking through books of codes to find what may or may not work. Also handle's macros.

Check the Pronto series, they're touchscreen remotes that are like PDA's. Some are marketed under the Phillips brand name. Very customizable. The only bad thing is that they're pretty expensive. You can probably pick up an older one on eBay for a great deal.
