Speaking as an iPod newbie, I'm rather taken with the little guy.  It just feels better than the cheapo players I've had before in terms of usability, though the cosmetic features are obviously not built to last.  Seriously, Apple -- we now have plastics that won't scratch if you look at them the wrong way.  I'll try Brasso this weekend and see if that does the trick.

 There's a flaw in your logic here -- you don't need to use iTunes to get music on and off.  I'm a big fan of free and lightweight, so I've begun doing the rounds with some of the alternatives.  Yamipod is good if you just want to get your music on and off and don't care that much about syncing, while ephpod tries to be more of an iTunes replacement.  I've had the iPod plugin for Winamp for a while to handle my Shuffle needs, and I've been highly impressed with it, but I have yet to try it with the iPod itself.

 I'm thinking that you're probably right about the battery, though -- I've looked into it (that's what I get for buying used, I guess) and Apple wants $60 to replace the battery.  If I ever absolutely have to, it'll probably be so old as to be practically worthless and I'd probably give cracking the case a try.  I believe there's one guy who can do it blindfolded, so it can't be too hard, right? (Wrong.  I'll probably kill it.)  But disposable batteries are not the answer -- ideally, I would like a device that easily pops open so I can replace it myself.

And as for the power cable, I feel your pain.  I just paid $30 for a non-OEM charger and cord before discovering that eBay had them for basically shipping charges.  But there's really no other alternative, at this point, and the cord is *not* that big.  My external hard drive cord is lots bigger.

Your needs != Everybody's needs

I'm glad you like the cheaper players and that they satisfy your needs. However, apparently many other people have found the iPod to be a better solution. Just because there is alot of attention paid to it doesn't mean its a bad product. In this rare case, the hype may be warranted. To address your gripes: 1) Most people don't want to waste their own time dragging files around. They just want to sync and go. 2) Using standard batteries like AA or AAA like you imply would mean large players with short battery life. Sure, they could use internal replaceable rechargeable batteries, but that would take away from the smooth, single unit form factor. 3) Not sure what you suggest the alternative would be. Wireless connection? Built-in USB plug? There are many other functions on the dock connector besides USB, which means they would have to have a duplicate connector anyway, and there isn't much space for it. Can you image plugging a full-size iPod direct into the USB port? Wouldn't work well. Anyhow, the reason iPods are so popular are: easy, fast syncing work of art form factor easy music management easy availability of legally purchased music compatibility with existing formats like MP3 excellent sound quality via use of good components like Wolfson digital-to-analog converters easy to use interface large selection of accessories and ways to plug into home/car/speaker systems. It provides a well thought-out end-to-end system. Also, I don't own an iPod myself its just that I can see why its such a great product.

I can understand why hearing about the iPod is annoying, if I didn't have one then I'd probably be annoyed myself.

I don't see what is wrong with using software to move tracks from your HD to your iPod. Actually, you know - it's quite useful because you can sort/choose when tracks start/convert and so on.

What I would say is ****ed up is that the battery is crap. The irony of having an iPod video because you can't watch a video that's like just about 2 hours long, unless you have the backlight off and never touch the buttons/clickwheel. Btw, you can barely see the screen with the light off but Apple don't care about that. They only care about how long they can make the battery last using most efficiency.

You've missed out many things about the iPod which are bad. Like, you can't play many games on the iPod unless you have a linux. You still have to buy so much more for your iPod if you want it to perform better. I felt the iPod should have came with a DAB digital radio, especially the 5G for it's price.

I do use my iPod all the time though and it is useful.

I just know not to trust Apple ever again.
