it never hurts to know more. The more versatile you are, the better equipt you'll be in the future. If you're just looking to play in bands and such, you'll probably never need it, but if you want to get seriously into song writing, and understanding music, then you'd be hopeless without it. If guitar is something you want to get serious about, then you should never be willing to stop learning.

It entirely depends on what kind of music you are interested in. If you want to play classical, definitely learn it, otherwise your energy may be better spent learning music theory and other techniques.

Music theory and standard notation go hand in hand though. It definately can't hurt to learn standard notation.
