My girlfriend and I really get into "The Game of Life".  Lots of fun, and better fun yet to let her win ;-).

In this day, 4p or more are most dominant. The standards still meet the task though i.e chess, checkers, etc. There are some word games like Boggle and even Scrabble. If you want to go a little back in 1990, there were games like Perfection and Jenga. Take a walk through Toys 'backwards r' Us in their game isle. You're bound to find something interesting.

Risk, Stratego, Dominoes

I used to love Risk as a child.  My sister and I played it together all the time.  It was more fun when we could get more people, but it was by no means boring with only two.

Stratego is also fun.  That's a two person only game.  Try to find the other player's flag!

My boyfriend and I play Dominoes all the time, too.  It's not quite a board game, but it's still fun.  I find dominoes more fun with just two people, though you can always add more.

Go for lesser known board games

There are a lot of lesser-known games that are great for 2 players.  Power Grid is a good one, so is Ticket to Ride and Robo Rally.  Check out http://www.boardgamegeek.com for other great idea for lesser known but really fun board games.  The German companies really rule when it comes to board games.
