Q: What makes a good site design?
Submitted By: Raptor235, 287 days, 10 hours, 56 minutes ago
I was just reading a article about MySpace (ugly design) vs other good designs... and does design really make a difference? Personally I think it does, especially if you're trying to create a clear message for the user... when I look at my space I find it very busy and hard to find information which is frustrating... anyway if you have a second let me know what do you think makes a good design. Thanks :)

A design where accessing content is easy is always the best design.

Less = More

Google.com has it right, they put the most important content on the first page and the rest of the site can be searched for from the google search box.
Does your site index well with search engines? Does your site even index with search engines? Did you overuse flash/java/embeded media?
MySpace is horrible btw I prefer xanga.com where I can actually navigate.

Planning & Site Goal

Simply work out exactly what you want your site to provide to your users and how best to do this before you jump in and start designing or coding. Decide what the goal of the site is and use this to help you decide what features ought to go in or not. It is very easy to get carried away with adding too many funky features (function & design) to a site which do little to satisfy the original site goal. Sometimes these extra elements can distract your users from the objective of the site. Good website design is more than just pretty design. Your aim is to achieve a design that helps you meet your site objectives in the best way possible.

Simplicity

I believe simplicity and readability are the most important factors. The font is one of the more important yet neglected factors in a site design as well. Comic Sans won't do, nor will a Serif font really. The less colors the better as well, just pick one color scheme and stick to it.

OK, so I'm just kidding...
I think the best thing is having clear, consistent navigation schemas. Don't leave the user looking for ANYTHING you want them to find.
