The question doesn't specify for which tasks. You'd be nuts to edit, say, lisp code in anything but emacs, for example, while vi is more than sufficient for making a quick change to a shell script. I use emacs essentially as an IDE for python and lisp, but I need to know how to use vi for quick things. Emacs is, by far, the most advanced text editor on the planet, but can take years to master. With vi, you can be up and running much faster. Try both. Maybe I found emacs easier because I use to use word processors with a similar CTRL

agreed: both are simply tools. Use the one that fits the job and you are comfortable with.
