Windows is what I prefer if you want to play Half Life 2 and other games that use DirectX. Windows is better at playing UT2004 but linux can also play it. You can play more DVDs in windows than in linux (But if you can't play it in linux, it has copywrite protection and doesn't want you to play it, so I'd torrent the movie). Windows has driver support for just about anything - Linux users will sometimes have to hunt down that obscure driver for your wireless card. Linux has a much more functional command prompt - which is really important if you really want to use your computer. You can customize what GUI you use in linux (Kde, Gnome, Fluxbox, Blackbox, or just a shell), in windows, you cannot use another GUI. In linux, you can easily set file permisions for everything. Windows is more supported for obscure hardware. You don't need to pay for linux. There are far, far less viruses for linux, and you will probably never encounter them. No web browsers are entangled in the OS (it is easier to remove the webbrowsers on a linux box than remove IE on a windows box). You can run many windows program in linux using Wine. There are a lot of security programs that are linux-native (nmap, ethereal? john, kismet). In short - there are good and bad things in both operating systems. I have two computers - one for windows gaming (HL2, FarCry, Area 51, UT2004, FEAR, etc.) and I use my linux computer for listening to music, surfing the web, IMing people, watching DVDs, programming, more of the everyday sorts of things. If you want to spend money and buy an OS that can do less, but can play HL2 and FarCry, you need windows. For anything else, Linux makes sense, especially if you want to really use your computer.

I was using Windows for a while, but then I decided to get a Mac Mini. It works great, it definitely surpasses WIndows XP (or any version of Windows for that matter), and as was said in an earlier answer, it "has the power of Unix with the looks of Apple." I've never tried Linux, though, so that may become my favorite if I ever get one it seems to be pretty popular.
