Bridge Building Competition
Submitted By: michaeljh (57)
The bridge building contest I’m entering in consists of putting more and more weight on the model bridge made of pine wood until it goes smashy smashy. You're bridge efficiency is determined by the load it carried before bridge failure divided by its own mass. There is a bucket that hangs down from the bridge where you then put the weights.
The bucket that hangs from your bridge is 2kg and you have a whole mess of weights at your disposal, either 1kg or 0.5kg. Finally, my question: is it good to put the weights in as fast as you possibly can or should you stall just a little bit before putting the next weights in and if so, approximately how long (half a second, a whole second, etc.)?

Is it copyright infringement to name a website after a song?
Submitted By: kritic (4)
I recently acquired a domain name from a song I enjoy. The domain is the same as the title of the song. I like it but a friend said that it was copyright infringement. The website is not a fan site, I just enjoy the name. The band is not super popular and the song is not released on their LP, but perhaps one day they may become popular. Could this get me in trouble down the road?

Why is the speed of light the value that it is?
Submitted By: Craig (21)
We know that the speed of light in a given medium is a constant and that the speed of light in a vacuum appears to be an absolute limit and that E=mc^2. However, can anyone prove to me mathematically (ie without resorting to experiments that measure the speed of light or deduce it from interference patterns etc) why c is the value that it is and not some other value? Is there a way of deriving c from first principles which shows it to be the only rate that electromagnetic radiation can propagate at in this universe and why? i.e. We can prove without resorting to measurement why PI is the value that it is, can the same not be true for c?
Networking: why am I not using all available bandwidth?
Submitted By: michaeljh (57)
I have a home network running in my house and I'm concerned about something. Here are two computers both running Windows XP Pro SP2. There is a reliable Belkin router connecting these two on the network. One of them is wired and one is a laptop so it's wirelessly connected. Say I'm transferring a large 5 GB or so file from the wired computer to the laptop through the 54 mbps connection. The laptop is no more than three feet away from the router. The transfer progresses taking several minutes.
Anytime throughout the transmission, the networking tab on the Task Manager shows the network active. I see the active 54 mbps connection yet the Task Manger reveals that only 40-45% of network capacity is being used! Instead of getting the full 54 mbps, it's telling me I'm getting about 23ish. I've googled this for awhile and am coming up empty.
The transfer eventually completes with no problems. However, I feel bummed out about not getting more bandwidth than what I am. Anybody have such results as well and can offer a solution to get more bandwidth?

Where can I get 50 pint bottles?
Submitted By: mister.joshua (98)
I'm setting up a shaved ice bar and need 50 matching pint bottles suitable for fitting with pour spouts. Clear glass liquor bottles would be ideal, but I have no idea how to obtain them. Should I call local bars, the recycling plant? Does some company sell them in bulk online?
